Rethinking
Service Learning
At La Marea, we believe meaningful service begins with connection.
We don't see communities as projects to complete or experiences as opportunities to simply arrive, help, and leave. We believe in taking the time to understand what's already here, learning from the people around us, and participating in ways that are thoughtful, respectful, and rooted in local priorities.
Sometimes that means sharing a skill. Sometimes it means lending a hand. And sometimes it means simply showing up, listening, and allowing yourself to learn.
The goal isn't to arrive with all the answers. It's to arrive open to what the experience might teach us.
A different way
to experience a place.
Meaningful travel begins with how you enter a place — with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to be present.
La Marea experiences are built around connection: to people, to culture, to community, and to the rhythms of everyday life in the Dominican Republic.
We aren't here to simply show you a place. We invite you to become part of it.
The exchange
goes both ways.
Every person arrives with something to offer — experiences, skills, questions, stories, energy. And every person leaves having received something, too.
but people learning from one another.
Relationships
come first.
La Marea grew from relationships built over years — through education, baseball, community, family, and simply spending time together.
We collaborate with local educators, coaches, families, community leaders, organizations, and young people to understand what is meaningful and where participation can genuinely support what's already happening.
Listen before leading.
Work alongside, not above.
Let local knowledge lead.
Community isn't part of the itinerary. It's where the experience begins.
Different ways in.
The same intention underneath.
There isn't one way to experience the Dominican Republic. Each experience offers a different entry point into people, place, culture, and connection.
Different experiences. One shared philosophy: participate fully, remain curious, and let connection lead the way.
Designed around
your purpose.
There is no standard La Marea itinerary.
A high school baseball team may arrive wanting to play, connect, and grow together. A student group may come to explore culture, sustainability, or education. Another group may be looking for space to slow down, reconnect, and experience the Dominican Republic beyond the surface.
We begin by understanding who you are, why you're coming, and what you hope to take from the experience.
From there, we thoughtfully bring together the people, places, activities, and moments that make sense for your group.
The itinerary follows the intention — not the other way around.
Impact moves
both ways.
Our work is rooted in long-term relationships with young people, educators, coaches, families, and community partners.
As La Marea grows, so does our ability to invest more deeply in the people and initiatives we're connected to — supporting mentorship, youth development, educational opportunities, local leadership, and community-driven projects.
The experience doesn't end when a group leaves the Dominican Republic.
Participants return home carrying new relationships, greater cultural understanding, stronger leadership skills, deeper questions, and a broader sense of their place in the world.
It's that something about how you see the world has shifted.
Built for
the long term.
La Marea began with experiences. But our vision extends beyond them.
We envision a future where young people in the Dominican Republic have greater access to mentorship, guidance, opportunity, and support as they navigate education, career pathways, and personal growth.
We're working toward deeper, year-round opportunities for Dominican youth rooted in mentorship, education, sport, leadership, and meaningful relationships.
That means building slowly. Listening to the people closest to the work. Strengthening local partnerships. And allowing what we learn through each experience to inform what comes next.
Because meaningful impact isn't created in a week. It's built through relationships that continue long after the trip ends.
Come experience
it for yourself.
Every group begins somewhere different. Tell us who you are, what brings you here, and what you're hoping to experience.
